Botanic information
Leaf: The leaves are reduced to a tan bract or sheath on each node and the photosynthesis is carried out by the needle-like pendant secondary branches that appear in a circle at each node on the main stems.

Flower: The tiny green-yellow male and female flowers appear in a brownish raceme-like terminal inflorescence that is up to 350 mm (14 in) tall and is initially enclosed in a leaf-like spathe which soon falls away. The flowers appear during mid spring and persist on the plant until summer and are a decorative feature of the plant.

Fruit: The small winged nuts appear over a period of time and some may persist on the plant making it easy for collection. The small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
