Propagation
Sow fresh seed as viability is short in situ or stratified first before sowing indoors or sow in flats and place in a cold frame.

Germination is sporadic and occurs between 14-90 days. Prick out when large enough to handle and pot up into an organic mix, then grow on for one year before planting out, space 150 mm to 200 mm (9 in) apart.

Division of the rhizome during early spring while dormant.
Simple layering during the growing period.


Botanic information
Leaf: The light green pubescent broad-ovate to cordate leaves have 3-7 lobes and a long petiole up to 102 mm (4 in) long. The apex is acute and the margins are dentate. During autumn the leaves turn reddish bronze before falling and are a feature of the plant.

Flower: The pinkish buds open to a campanulate flowers with 5-calyx lobes and 5-triangular white petals and 10 exserted stamens with pink anthers and a superior ovary. They are arranged in a spike-like raceme that is up to 300 mm (1 ft) tall that is held high above the foliage and repeatedly blooms from mid to late spring.

Fruit: The tiny capsule is composed of 2-unequal parts and contains numerous small seeds. They should be removed when the fruit is dry and the small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
