Propagation
Sow fresh seeds during autumn in containers and place in a cold frame to germinate. Prick out and pot up when large enough to handle and plant out the following year.
Soft tip cuttings taken during early summer and placed in a protected environment until roots appear. Take care when transplanting as it dislikes root disturbance.
Botanic information
Leaf: The almost sessile thin textured leaves are elliptical to ovate up to 16 mm (? in) wide with an acute apex and a broad cuneate base. The mid green upper surface is glabrous and the underside is pubescent particularly along the mid-vein. During autumn leaves turn a brilliant red before falling.
Note
The persistent juvenile leaves are dark green with finely serrated margins.
Flower: The tiny urceolate flowers have 4-5 fused petals that form an urn-shape with 8-10 stamens that are awned. They appear solitary or in pairs in the leaf axils towards the end of the strongly angled twigs from late spring to early summer.
Fruit: The bright red globose berries contain numerous tiny seeds and are accompanied by the persistent calyx. The acidic berries can be eaten fresh, or dried for later use and are also used for fish bait. The small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
