Botanic information
Leaf: The bright green broad-lanceolate to elliptical leaves have an acute apex and serrated margins. The petiole is short and the darkish new foliage may be sticky to touch.
Flower: The pink to red tubulate flowers are 2-lipped with a curled lower lip and a 4-lobed upper lip. The 4-stamens protrude from the pubescent corolla and the green calyx lobes are narrow and the pedicle is curved. The flowers appear in the leaf axils solitary or in a loose cluster from late spring to early summer and sporadically throughout the year.
Fruit: The 2 to 4 chambered hard and woody drupe is indehiscent, dry and sometimes splitting at the apex. There are 1 to 3 hard-coated seeds per chamber and they are difficult to germinate. The plant is normally reproduced vegetatively.
