Propagation
Sow fresh seed during spring in flats and pick out one large enough to handle. The seeds require no pre-treatment.
Division of established clumps during autumn.
Botanic information
Leaf: The blue green linear leaves are up to 1 m (3 ft) long and wide and are rolled or flat. They have a sheath that is scabrous and the collar is glabrous to pubescent and the ligule is up to 4 mm (? in).
Flower: The spikelets are up to 18mm (? in) long and the upper and lower glumes are up to 8 mm (? in) with the florets to 6 mm (¥ in). The glaborous lemma is up to 12 mm (½ in) and the awn to 5 mm (? in). They are arranged in a long inflorescence that is up to 27 mm (1? in) long and is held above the foliage on a slender scape to 1 m (3 ft) tall, appearing during early spring.
Fruit: The small brownish caryopsis is viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
