Propagation
Sow fresh seed in containers and place in a protected environment until germination occurs.
Cuttings taken from mature branches up to 200 mm in diameter and planted directly in situ. Take care not to allow cuttings to dry out.
Large plants may be transplanted.
Botanic information
Leaf: The palmate leaves are divided into 5-9 elliptical leaflets that are up to 130 mm (5? in) long in by 35 mm (1? in) wide with an acuminate apex and with slightly undulating margins.
The upper surface is dark green and the underside is pale-green. The leaves are shed during the dry season and new leaves appear. just before the wet season.
Flower: The 5-large creamy-fleshy white funnelform flowers have reflexed elliptical petals and accompanied with a silky hairs and have numerous protruding cream-coloured stamens with brown anthers. They are arranged singularly in the leaf axils and appear from summer to autumn.
Fruit: The globular woody capsule is up to 200 mm (7µ in) diameter with a brittle shell that is pubescent when young and is brown to black when mature. It contains numerous kidney shaped pea-size seeds that are embedded in white pulp.
The pulp is highly nutritious and high vitamin C and edible oil is derived from the seeds. The flowering and fruiting period may vary in tropical climates. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
