Propagation
Sow fresh seed during spring and place in a protected environment. Germination occurs within 24 days and fruit is produced in 6-7 years.
Cuttings taken during late spring and place in a protected environment. Trees may also be grafted and produce fruit in 3-4 years.
Botanic information
Leaf: The leathery textured oblong leaves are up to 120 mm (4µ in) wide and have a glabrous glossy dark green upper surface. The underside is covered in silvery tomentose and the new growth is pinkish. The apex is acuminate and the base is cuneate with a short petiole.
Flower: The tubulate flowers have 4-sepals and petals and the female appear solitary. The male flowers have whitish stamens and are arranged in a cyme with up to 7-blooms. Both female and male flowers may be present on a single plant or on different plants (polygamodioecious) during spring.
Fruit: The red to brownish pubescent berry has an enlarged persistent calyx at the base and contains 1-10 smooth brown, wedge shaped seeds, up to 40 mm (1? in) long. In many cases the fruit may be seedless and has a sweet banana-like taste. When eaten the odours skin is removed. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
