Propagation
Sow fresh seeds in pots and place in a protected environment until germination occurs.

Cuttings can be taken during late spring and the tree may be shield grafted onto root stocks.


Botanic information
Leaf: The glabrous leathery texture leaves are oblong-ovate to lanceolate with prominent pale green venation. The upper surface is a glossy green and the underside is pale green with an acuminate apex and a cuneate base. The petiole is long and the margins are undulating. Young leaves are reddish maturing to dark glossy green.

Flower: The tiny tubulate male flowers have stamens with bright yellow anthers and the smaller female flowers are arranged in a globose cluster on a different tree (dioecious). The flowering period is from spring to summer but in tropical climates they may appear throughout the year.

Fruit: The fleshy berry is composed of multiple carpels (syncarp) that is green ripening to yellow with a rough skin and contains numerous nutritious oily seeds.

The pulpy mature fruit weighs up to 15 kg (33lb) and is attached to the stems by a short stalk. The fruit may be produced throughout the year in tropical climates. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.


Note
The dried seed is commercially available and the tree it can produce 5-10 tons of dried grain per hectare yearly. The golden yellow flexible fine-grained timber is used for the manufacture of furniture or used for carving. The fruit has several medicinal uses such as a laxative and treatment leprosy, coughs and colds and a non-alcoholic drink, can be derived from the seeds (almond milk).

The growth habit of this tree is variable but under ideal conditions it can attain a height of 50 m (155 ft) and care should be taken as the roots can lift concrete or damage drains.
