Propagation
Sow fresh seed during spring and maintain a temperature of 16º to 24ºC.

Soft tip or semi-hardwood cuttings during late summer to early winter and apply bottom heat.


Botanic information
Leaf: The leathery textured oblong to elliptical leaves have an acute apex and a short petiole and are up to 130 mm (5? in) wide. The new growth is bright red becoming mustard then maturing to dark glossy green and is a feature of the plant. The leaves are arranged oppositely on quadrangular branchlets.

Flower: The cyathiform flowers are solitary or arranged in groups of 3 in a terminal or axillary cyme that has a short peduncle. The calyx is cup-shape with 4-triangular lobes, inside alternately are 4-cream coloured petals accompanied by numerous exserted stamens. The flowers appear from spring to summer or sporadically throughout the year in tropical climates.

Fruit: The pinkish-red urn-shaped berry has a fleshy mesocarp and is capped with persistent calyx lobes. It has a solitary seed and the fruit s edible but has a bland flavour. The small seeds have a short viability period and the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
