Propagation
Sow fresh seeds during spring at a depth equal to their length in containers and plant out when large enough to handle. Do not allow seeds to dry before germination.
Soft tip or semi hardwood cuttings or air layering taken during the growing period.
Botanic information
Leaf: The large leathery leaves are cordate to orbicular with a short reddish petiole and an obtuse apex. The upper surface is dark glossy green and the underside is pale green with prominent reddish veins. The new leaves have a coppery colour and mature leaves turn completely red before falling in winter.
Flower: The male flowers are arranged in a small cluster in the female flowers appear at the nodes on a different plant (dioecious). They consist of 5-greenish white sepals with 7-8 exserted white stamens.
The pedestal is short and they are arranged densely in an axillary raceme that is up to 255 mm (10 in) long. The flowers appear during spring and are butterfly and bee attracting.
Fruit: The rigid brown achene is surrounded by a fleshy calyx with a short stalk. They are arranged in a a pendant cluster (grape-like) and are green turning red then maturing purple. The fruit is only produced on the female plants and the small seeds are viable but the plant may be grown vegetatively.
Note:
Sea Grape will tolerate air pollution poor drainage or compact soils and in coastal scrubland or grasslands the shrub forms a sprawling habit with an indistinct trunk and shallow intertwined roots.It performs better on fertile moist soils.
