Botanic information
Leaf: The thick leathery textured leaves are oblong to elliptical-oblong, up to 100 mm (4in) wide with an acute apex and a short petiole. The glossy green upper surface has numerous parallel lateral veins and the new growth has a bronzy colour.
Flower: The male and female flowers have 5-greenish reflexed sepals and 5-white petals. The male and female flowers normally appear on separate plants (dioecious) but bisexual flowers may also be present. They are arranged in small axillary cluster on a long pedestal and appear during summer.
Fruit: The leathery indehiscent globose berry is green maturing to yellow with persistent sepals and a curved pointed tip. It contains 2-brown oval shaped seeds that are surrounded by juicy yellowish pulp. When eaten raw they have an acidic to sour taste. The flowering and fruiting period may vary in tropical climates.
