Sow fresh seeds in containers and place in a protected environment until germination occurs.

Cuttings taken during the growing period. Selected, improved varieties for better fruit production.


Botanic information
Leaf: The ovate to oval leathery textured leaves have an acuminate apex and a short petiole. The upper surface is glossy dark green and the underside is pale green. They are arranged in opposite pairs along the stem and accompanied with branched spines.

Flower: The salverform flowers have a corolla tube that is up to 12 mm (½ in) long with 5-spreading oblong petals with a rounded apex. They are arranged in a terminal or axillary cluster and appear in summer or several times throughout the year in tropical regions. Flowers and fruit may appear on the plant simultaneously.

Fruit: The reddish berry has a thin skin and contains 6-16 small circular seeds that are surrounded by reddish pulp with white milky latex. When eaten the flavour is a similar to cranberries. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
