Propagation
Stratify seeds for 2 to 3 months during winter and sow seeds in pots then place them in a cold frame.
Collect seeds before the fruit turns brown and sow into a prepared bed. Seeds may or may not require a cold period.
Botanic information
Leaf: The leaves are ovate to elliptical with a slightly lobed to coarsely serrated margin. The glossy green upper surface is glabrous with 10 to 15 pairs of red veins and the underside is covered in rusty tomentose.
Flower: The pendant yellow-brown male catkins are up to 150mm (6 in) long and appear in a cluster of 3-5 before the leaves. The female strobili are globose and develop into the fruit.
Fruit: The woody cone-like nut is ovoid with 5-lobed scales and contains winged seeds.
