Propagation
Sow fresh seed during early spring and pre-soak seeds in heated water 13º to 18ºC (55º-64ºF) for 24 hours. Seeds may require scarification (peeling treatment).
Semi hardwood cuttings taken during autumn and apply bottom heat.
Botanic information
Leaf: The sessile orbicular to obovate leaves clasp the stem and are up to 40 mm (1? in) wide. The margin is serrated with a slightly pungent tip and the upper surface has prominent light green venation and is covered in a few hairs.
Flower: The small tubulate flowers have a pedestal that is up to 8 mm (? in)long and the oblong-ovoid red perianth segments are up to 12mm (½in) in length witha protruding red style to 20mm (µ in) long.
There are 4-8 flowers arranged in a terminal umbel-like raceme up to 30mm (1?in) long and are accompanied by tiny ovate bracts. The flowers appear from late winter to summer or sporadically throughout the year in warm regions and are pollinated by birds.
Fruit: The ovoid follicle is up to 9mm (? in) wide with a brownish granulose pericarp and contains a single oblong seed to 8mm (? in) long with a thin member as skin. The small seeds are viable but the plant is may be reproduced vegetatively. The fruiting period may extend throughout the year.
