Botanic information
Leaf: The pinnate phylloclades are up to 300 mm (1ft) long and have 10 to 15 broad rhomboid segments with a cuneate base. The segments are irregularly lobed and have minutely crenate margins. The upper surface is dark green and the underside is glaucous and the leaf-like segments resemble celery leaves.
Note
A phylloclade is a shoot or stem that takes the form and functions as a leaf.
Flower: There are 5-10 tiny cylindrical male strobili that appear in a terminal cluster on a short pedestal and the female forms a globose head that is rarely solitary at the tips of modified phylloclades. Both appear on the same tree (monoecious) during spring.
Fruit: The small compressed nut like cones appear in clusters on the margins of the phylloclades and the seeds are exserted beyond the irregular cupule. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
