Propagation
Sow fresh seed during late winter in flats and prick out and pot up when large enough to handle, and grow on in a greenhouse. Plant out after the last frost in spring into a very well-prepared bed. See the note on short day and long day varieties in the plant overview.

Botanic information
Leaf: The scented blue green hollow long linear leaves are terete in cross section and are up to 600 mm (2 ft) tall by 20 mm (µ in) wide and are sheaved at the base.

Flower: The white to pinkish stellate flowers are up to 5 mm (? in) wide with oblong-ovate perianth segments with a pale greenish or red mid-vein and exserted stamens with yellow anthers. They have a long green pedicle and sometimes are accompanied with bulbils. There are up to 500 flowers arranged in a terminal globular umbel with deciduous spathe bracts. It is held above the foliage on a thickened scape that is from 500 mm (18 in) to 1 m (3 ft) tall and appears in spring in the second year of growth and is pollinated by bees or insects.

Fruit: The small loculicidal capsule contains small black seeds that are very viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively to maintain true to type.
