Propagation
Stratify seeds for 2 to 3 months during winter in peat at a temperature of 1.1º to 5º C. (34º to 41º F). Sow seeds in pots then place them in a cold frame to germinate.
Botanic information
Leaf: The flat linear leaves are up to 15mm (? in) wide with an obtuse to notched apex, the upper surface is dark green and the underside has 2 narrow stomatic bands. They are arranged densely along the pubescent branchlets and the winter buds are bluish.
Flower: The small male flowers are nodding or pendulous and arranged in the leaf axils on the underside of the branchlets in the previous seasons growth, releasing pollen during spring. The female cones are upright, green and purplish and found only towards the top of the crown. They appear duering spring.
Fruit: The cylindrical female cone is green-purplish maturing to blackish brown with exserted obcordate bracts and the scales that contain winged seeds.
