Propagation
Sow fresh seed during early spring and pre-soak seeds in heated water 13º to 18ºC (55º-64ºF) for 24 hours. Seeds may require scarification (peeling treatment).
Semi hardwood cuttings taken during the growing period and apply bottom heat.
Botanic information
Leaf: The glossy dark green elliptical to narrow obovate leaves are up to 140 mm (5½ in) long by 50 mm (2 in) wide with a short pubescent petiole and a acute-mucronate apex. The upper surface is almost glaborous and the underside is silky with a prominent midrib.
Flower: The tubulate flowers have a curved pedestal up to 5 mm (¥ in)long and the oblong red to pink, apricot or yellow perianth segments are up to 25 mm (1 in) long by 4 mm (? in) wide witha exserted brown, red, orange or yellow style is up to 26 mm (1 in) long with an oblique to lateral pollen presenter.
The flowers are arranged in a terminal or sometimes axillary, cylindrical raceme up to 85 mm (3½ in) long by 60 mm (2? in) wide and is accompanied by narrow triangular to linear deciduous bracts up to 3 mm (? in) long. The flowers appear from spring to summer and may extend to autumn and are pollinated by birds.
Fruit: The ovoid-ellipsoidal follicle is up to 20 mm (µ in) wide by 8 mm (? in) wide and the pericarp is longitudinal in ridged. The narrow oblong-obovoid seeds have revolute margins and are up to 15 mm (? in) long by 3 mm (? in) wide. The small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
