Propagation
Separate seeds from pulp and sown in autumn in a moist medium and maintain a temperature of 5º C (41º F) for 3-months.
Softwood cuttings taken from summer to autumn and place on a misting bench until roots appear with in 6 to 8 weeks. Avoid excessive moisture for both cuttings and seeds.
Botanic information
Leaf: The variable leaves are obovate to rhombic-elliptical with a few spines or lobes or linear with an entire margin. The petiole is very short and the new growth has a reddish ting. They appear in groups of 3 to 4 in the stem axils.
Flower: The nodding cyathiform flowers have 6-petal-like sepals and 6- petals with 6-stamens and the ovary contains a single cell. They are arranged in axillary fascicles on a long slender pedicle and appear during spring.
Fruit: The small fleshy berries are black with a bluish bloom. The small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively to maintain true to type.
