Botanic information
Leaf: The new elliptical leaves reddish and the mature obovate leaves are dull dark green on the upper surface. The underside is creamy-green and the short petiole is red. They are arranged in groups of 3-5 in the axils and are accompanied by tripinnate spines along the reddish stems.

Flower: The orange-yellow cyathiform flowers have 6-petal-like sepals and 6-petals arranged in alternating whorls of three with 6-stamens and the ovary contains a single cell. They are solitary or arranged in pairs in the leaf axils on a long slender pedestal to 25 mm (1 in) long and appear during late spring.

Fruit: The small purplish-black grape-like berry has a fleshy texture and is covered in a powdery secretion (pruinose). The small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively to avoid natural hybrids.
