Propagation
There are two methods; sow fresh seeds in moist sand and maintain a temperature of 18º to 21º C. (64º to 75º F) for up to 100 days or stratified for 90 days in acidic peat maintaining a temperature of 10º to 13º C. (50º to 55º F).
Cuttings taken during winter and immersed in water allowing to soak prior to posting in sand and peat medium. Rooting may take up to 32 weeks to occur.
Botanic information
Leaf: There are two forms of leaves; the small-scale like are arranged spirally on the twigs and the glossy dark green flattened linear leaves are up to 4mm (? in) wide.
These are arranged in a terminal whorl (umbrella-like) and are commonly fused pairs. The leaves are grooved on both sides and the underside is olive green. The leaves persistent on the tree for or up to 3-years.
Flower: The male flowers are up to 25mm (1in) long and are arranged in a raceme and the solitary female flowers are terminal and are sustained by a small bract. They appear on the same tree (monoecious) during spring.
Fruit: The upright female cones is oblong ovate up to 50mm (2in) wide with broad scales that a reflex along the margins. The greenish cone ripens to brown in the second year and contains numerous 2-winged seeds that are up to 12mm (½in) long. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
