Propagation
Stratify seeds for 1 to 2 months in a moist media and maintain a temperature of -1.2º C (30°F). Then and sow seeds in pots and place in a cold frame to germinate.

Note:
This tree will grow in swampy or boggy conditions with low rainfall and tolerates extremely cold temperatures but dislikes hot climates.


Botanic information
Leaf: The needle-like linear leaves are arranged spirally along the stems in clusters of 12 to 30 on short spurs. The blue green leaves have 2-stomatic bands on the pale green underside and turn yellowish during autumn before falling. It has slightly resinous glossy brown buds.

Flower: The tree is monoecious with globose coloured female strobili that have reddish scales and the smaller domed male strobili are green at the base and yellow when shedding pollen. They appear numerously along the branchlets in early spring.

Fruit: The small oblong green to purplish cone matures to straw-brown and is up to 12 mm (½ in) wide. It has 15 to 20 scales and the small seeds are up to 4 mm (? in) long with chestnut brown wings up to 7 mm (¥ in) long. The short-stalked cones fall during the second season.
