Propagation
Sow fresh seed during spring in a prepared bed or container. The seeds may require hot and cold stratification in order to germinate in 6-18 months. Seedlings emerge in spring and should be kept moist but not wet.

Botanic information
Leaf: The dark green trifoliolate leaves are up to 230 mm (9 in) long and are composed of 3-elliptical to broad elliptical spiny serrated, leathery textured leaflets that pale green on the underside. The leaves are arranged alternately along the stems and there is no basal foliage.

Flower: The large crateriform flowers are up to 50 mm (2 in) wide have 5-pale green sepals that may be suffused in purple and a central boss of many arching stamens. The flowers are arranged in a nodding terminal cyme that appears from late winter to early spring.

Fruit: There are 3-10 small sessile follicles that contain numerous tiny viable seeds but the plant can be reproduced vegetatively to maintain true to type.
