Propagation
Sow fresh seeds once all the pulp has been removed and washed. Select the largest seeds and do not allow them to dry out and there is no pre-treatment required prior to sowing but may be soaked in water for 24 hours.
Plant seeds at a depth of 20 mm (µ in) in a moist but well-drained media and germination occur in 1-6 weeks. Pot up in 3-4 months and place in a semi-shaded position to grow on, then plant out at 8 m (25 ft) spacing.
The seedlings are variable and are commonly grafted onto a rootstock for commercial growers.
Note:
This plant is vigorous from seed if grown in situ and produces a fruit within 4-14 years. The cultivar 'Singapore' producers fruit in 18-30 months and normally mature from middle to late summer.
Botanic information
Leaf: The glossy dark green leathery textured elliptical to obovate leaves are up to 200 mm (8 in) long with an obtuse-mucronate apex and entire margins. The base is cuneate with a short petiole and the underside is pale green with prominent whitish veins.
Note:
Only the seedlings and juvenile leads have lobes.
Flower: The tree is monoecious. The short lived tiny pale green male flowers appear in a dense fleshy cylindrical spike that is up to 100 mm (4 in) long and is found above the female spike. The larger tubulate female flowers are arranged in a globular cluster-like spike. Both emerge from the trunk or larger branches during summer or sporadically throughout the year in tropical regions and pollinated by insects or wind.
Fruit: The large yellow-green oblong-cylindrical pome is is up to 400 mm (16 in) long or more and can weigh up to 30 kg (66 lb). The outer thick rubbery surface is covered in hexagonal, blunt conical carpals and the seeds are surrounded by an acidic to sweetish banana-flavoured flesh (aril).
They appear on the trunk and main branches and take up to 180 days to mature and there is commonly 2-seasons annually. Each fruit contains around 500 light brown rounded seeds that are 30 mm (1? in) long by 15 mm (? in) wide.
The seeds remain viable for up to 1-month only if stored in a cool humid place and kept moist. The seedlings are commonly variable. The fruit can be eaten raw when mature cooked or boiled prior to eating. The small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
