Botanic information
Leaf: The leaves are oblong to elliptical with an obtuse base and the petiole is up to 12mm (½in) long. The margins are finely dentate and the underside is purplish. The dark green leaf surface is covered in fine hairs when young, becoming glabrous at maturity and the mid vein is prominent.
Flower: The sessile bisexual crateriform flowers have 5-sepals and 5-obovate petals with numerous stamens. They are arranged terminally on short side branches and appear from late winter to early spring.
Fruit: The small follicles are surrounded by the persistent calyx and the fruit is dehiscent from the top containing seeds with arils. The small seeds are viable but may be difficult to germinate so the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
