Propagation
Plant fresh seeds in a deep container to 150mm (6in) deep during spring, keep moist and maintain a temperature of 19º to 27ºC. (66º to 81ºF).
Sporadic germination may take up to 3 months and, do not allow the seed to dry out before sowing.
Large plants can be transplanted.
Botanic information
Leaf: The pinnate fronds have many drooping dark green linear segmente (pinnae) that are arranged radically along the rachis forming a plume-effect. The smooth glossy green crownshaft is up to 2.5m (8ft) long.
Flower: The long inflorescence appears erect below the crownshaft and is well branched. It is enclosed by 2-decidious woody bracts with the larger upper one pointed.
They appear during late winter but the flowering period may vary in tropical regions.
The small cyathiform flowers are arranged in groups of 3 with 2-male and 1-female in the lower part. The upper part of the inflorescence has male flowers only.
The male flowers have 3-imbricate sepals and 3-petals that may be united at the base. It contains 6-stamens and a small sterile pistil. The female flowers have 3-imbricate sepals and 3-petals that are united at the base and may also touch at the apex. It contains a stigma that is divided into three at the apex and has a 1-celled ovary with 1-ovule.
Fruit: The small spherical drupe retains the stigma at the base and the mesocarp is thin and fleshy. The fruit is arranged in large pendant clusters and the seed has endosperm that is ruminating.
