Botanic information
Leaf: The broad thin textured glossy green costapalmate (fan-shaped) fronds are up to 1.5m (5ft) wide and divided deeply into numerous long-linear segments that droop at the split apex. The arching petiole is up to 2m (6ft) long and is armed along the lower margins with sharp teeth and is fibrous at the base.
Flower: The 2m (6ft) longinflorescence appears from the frond bases on a peduncle that becomes an elongated mid-rib and divides into several pendant side branches which in turn, are divided into slender rachillae. In bud the inflorescence is inclosed in 2-tubular woody bracts.
The bisexual cyathiform flowers have 3-united sepals and 3-larger ovate petals that are valvate at the apex. There are 6-stamens that are united at the base and the flowers have 3-cells with a separate 1-celled segment, and are united at the top to form a single style with a tiny stigma. They are arranged on the rachillae singularly or in clusters and may have a short pedicle. They appear from late autumn to winter.
Fruit: The purple-black drupe has a smooth fleshy exocarp and contains a single hard coated seed.
