Botanic information
Leaf: The bright green semicircular costapalmate fronds are divided into stiff-linear segments up to one quarter of its depth and are up to 2m (6ft) wide. The unarmed yellow-green stout petiole is up to 1m (3ft) long with a waxy coating and clasps the trunk in a mass of fibres.
Flower: The 1m (3ft) long upright inflorescence appears from the frond bases, accompanied by persistent tubular bracts and is divided into many branches.
The bisexual tubulate flowers have 3-united sepals that form a tube or bell-shape and 3-petals that also are united to form a tube that is shed as the flower opens. The flowers have a 3-celled ovary with 1-ovule and an elongated style. They are arranged singularly along the rachillae.
The flowering period is during early summer but can vary in tropical regions and they may appear throughout the year.
Fruit: The small rounded drupe has a persistent calyx at the base and they are arranged in clusters amongst the foliage. The seed has a non-ruminate endosperm.
