Propagation
Sow fresh seed during early spring and pre-soak seeds in heated water 13º to 18ºC (55º to 64ºF) for 24 hours.
Division of suckers during spring.
Botanic information
Leaf: The large leathery ensiform leaves are up to 300mm (1ft) wide with an acuminate-caudate apex to 76mm (3in) long and has bowed-venation. The broad keel is armed with spines on the underside and the juvenile leaves are simular but much smaller.
Flower: The small male and female flowers appear on different plants (dioecious). The fragrant male flowers appear in spikes that are accompanied with bracts and the female flowers are arranged in a globose head that appears during spring.
Fruit: The large fruit (syncarp) is composed of drupes that are up to 100mm (4in) long. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
The flowering and fruiting period may vary in tropical regions.
