Botanic information
Leaf: The almost circular costapalmate fronds are divided into 80-100 drooping 1-ribed segments. The petiole is up to 3m (9ft) long and the dark margins are lined with spines. Remaining strap-like leaf bases are large and are arranged spirally around the trunk.

Flower: The inflorescence is a very large terminal panicle that is 3m (10ft) to 8m (25ft) long and appear from pedunculated tubular bracts on the trunk. Hundreds of small bisexual cyathiform flowers with 3-sepals and 3-united petals form clusters along the rachillae. The flowers contain 6-stamens 3-cells and 3-ovules.
Flowering only occurs once when the palm is between 20 and 50 years old (monocarpic) during spring.

Fruit: The globose green to brown drupe has a hard exocarp and a fleshy mesocarp containing a spherical seed with non-ruminate endosperm.
