Propagation
The outer shell may be removed prior to sowing.
Plant fresh seeds in a deep container to 150mm (6in) deep during spring, keep moist and maintain a temperature of 19º to 27ºC. (66º to 81ºF).
Sporadic germination may take up to 18 months. Avoid allowing the seed to dry out before sowing.
Botanic information
Leaf: The large dark green stiff pinnate fronds have a petiole up to 1.3m (4ft) long and the lanceolate leaflets are up to 1m (3ft) long. They are arranged at different planes along the rachis giving as plumose effect.
Flower: The large upright narrow inflorescence appears in the leaf bases and has many branches that divide into flowering branchlets. The small cyathiform flowers are arranged in pairs of 1-male and 1-female accompanied with a small bract. The male and female flowers are simular with 3-sepals that are united at the base and 3-petals.
Both have 6-stamens and the male has a small sterile pistil. The female flower has a stigma that is 3-lobed at the apex and the ovary has 3-cells with 3-ovules. The flowers appear during spring.
Fruit: The large ovoid drupe is very hard, covered in glossy overlapping scales and contains a curved seed with non-ruminate endosperm. The fruit is arranged densely in an arched cluster.
