Propagation
Sow fresh seed during early spring and pre-soak seeds in heated water 13º to 18ºC (55º to 64ºF) for 24 hours. Seeds may require scarification.
Botanic information
Leaf: The grey green trifoliate leaves have 3-lobed leaflets that are up to 102mm (4in) wide and have short stalks. The 2-laterial lobes have an obtuse apex and curve outwards while the centre lobe is pointed or sometimes is absent. The petiole is up to 102mm (4in) long and the stems may be armed with sharp prickles.
Flower: The red to orange papillionate flowershave a bell-shaped calyx that is open on one side, with 5-irregular petals. The larger standard petal is strongly curved and is up to 38mm (1½in) long and the 2-winged petals and 2-keel petals are up to 15mm (?in) long. The stamens areexserted and the flowers are arranged in anaxillary raceme that appears before the leaves during late winter.
Fruit: The pod tapers at both ends and is constricted between the 1, 2 or 3 red or yellow oval seeds that are up to 8mm (? in) long.
