Propagation
Plant fresh seeds in a deep container to 150mm (6in) deep during spring, keep moist and maintain a temperature of 19º to 27ºC. (66º to 81ºF).
Sporadic germination may take up to 18 months and, do not allow the seed to dry out before sowing.
Apply bottom heat to assist germination.
Botanic information
Leaf: The 2m (6ft) long petiole is unarmed but has smooth razor-sharp edges and the rounded palmate fronds are up to 4m (12ft) diameter. They are deeply divided into drooping wedge-shaped segments that may be divided again and have split apex.
Flower: The pendulous female spike is unbranched and the branched male inflorescence forms 3 to 5 orange spikes and both appear amongst the leaf bases on different plants (dioecious).
The large female flower has 3-sepals and 3-petals with a bract and sterile stamens arranged in a ring. The ovary has 3-cells with 1-ovule.
The male flower has 3-sepals that form a tube and 3-petals that also form a tube with expanded lobes and has up to 15 stamens that are attached to the petals. They appear from late spring to early summer.
Fruit: The large rounded blue-green drupe has a fibrous mesocarp and contains thin coated seeds that are enclosed in a hard endocarp. The endosperm is not ruminate but is hollow.
