Botanic information
Leaf: The leathery textured glossy dark green leaves are obovate to oblong with an entire to slightly serrated margin. It has a yellow green short petiole and mid rib. The prominent pinnate venation is slight pubescence on the underside and the leaves are up to 100mm (4in) wide.
Flower: The cyathiform flowers have a 6-lobed calyx and 6-unequal petals. In the centre has a yellow button-like stigma surrounded by a mass of yellow stamens that are borne on an androphore.
They are pungently fragrant at night and arranged in a raceme on a vine-like peduncle that grows from the trunk.
The long peduncle and the shedding tepals allow ample room for the bats to pollinate the flowers during early summer.
Fruit: The large globose woody capsule contains numerous seeds (300) that are embedded in soft greenish pulp. The fruit takes up to 1-year to mature and falls to the ground when ripe, decaying and smelling cheesy.
