The bases are overlapping and sheaved to the other leaves forming a tube and are upright at first and droop with age. The waxy upper surface is concave and the underside has a purplish tinge.

They are arranged in a large upright branched panicle that is up to 5 m (16 ft) tall. They appear during late spring or sporadically throughout the year in tropical regions.
Fruit: The small capsule contains numerous seeds with basal tufts of long straight hairs. There are between 80,000 to 200,000 seeds produced on a single inflorescence and are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively to maintain true to type.
