Propagation
Collect and sow seed when ripe, keep moist, maintaining a temperature of 19º to 27º C. (66º to 81º F) Germination normally takes up to 2-months and the viability period is short. Do not allow the seeds to dry out before sowing as this inhibits germination.
Botanic information
Leaf: The arching pinnate fronds have up to 50-pointed linear leaflets (pinnae) on either side of the rachis, arranged upwards forming a "V" shape and are up to 450mm (18in) long. The petiole and the 600mm (2ft) long crownshaft is orange-red to scarlet.
Flower: The inflorescence is enclosed in tubular bracts in bud and forms slender greenish spikes. The small flowers are arranged spirally in groups of 3 with 2-male and 1-female in pits. The male flower has 3-imbricate sepals and 3-valvate petals that may be united at the base. It contains 15-stamens and a small sterile pistil.
The female flower has 3-sepals and 3-petals that are united at the base when in bud and contains 3-stigmas and has a 3-celled ovary.
The flowering period is in late spring but can vary in tropical regions and they may appear throughout the year.
Fruit: The ovoid-conical drupe appears in clusters on yellow rachillae. The small ovoid seed has non-ruminate endosperm.
