Botanic information
Leaf: The leathery texture glossy dark green leaves are ovate to elliptical with conspicuous, light green lateral veins and midrib. The slightly pubescent underside is pale green and the margin is undulating. The apex is acuminate and the petiole is up to 25mm (1in) long..
Flower: The bisexual flowers have 6-perianth segments. The female and male flowers open at different times, but all trees flower at the same time and are either female or male. It is important to have more than one tree to ensure pollination. The female flower opens, then close and reopens when the male flower opens. Both female and male flowers are arranged in an upright axillary panicle appearing from autumn through to spring.
Fruit: The variable oblong to globose drupe has a leathery texture and is green maturing to black with whitish or yellowish or oily pulp. Variations of the species produce fruit from 50mm (2in) to 300mm (1ft) long. The fruit is very nutritious, high in protein and calories and contains a single hard coated seed. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
