Propagation
Sow the entire ripe fruit towards the top of the soil and keep moist.
Semi hardwood cuttings taken during summer and apply bottom heat.
Botanic information
Leaf: The sessile obovate leaves can grow to 600mm (2ft) long and have an obtuse apex. They are whorled towards the end of the branches with a dark green lacquered appearance and have a pail green mid rib.
Flower: The funnelform flowers have a calyx with 4-lobes and 4-spreading petals that are up to 65mm (2½in) long, opening at dusk. It has numerous long white stamens with crimson tips that appear pom pom-like, extending past the petals. They are arranged in a pendant raceme that is up to 300mm (1ft) long.
The ovary is inferior and contains 2 to 4 cells. The flowering period is fromlate spring to summer but can vary in tropical regions and they may appear throughout the year.
Fruit: The 4-angled drupe has the persistent calyx at the apex and contains a single seed that is poisonous. The waterproof fruit is light and buoyant and is distributed by floating from island to island. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
