Botanic information
Leaf: The broad linear leaves have a leathery texture with an obtuse apex with a recurved mucronate pungent tip. The upper surface is pale green with chequered, dark green markings and the underside is marked in purplish circles. The leaves are arranged in a rosette and the centre should be kept topped up with water.

Flower: The yellow to yellow-green tubulate flowers are accompanied by green bracts and arranged in an upright loose spike that is up to 450 mm (18 in) long. This is held above the foliage on scape that emanates from the centre of the rosette. The flowering period is during spring but in tropical climates may be variable.

Fruit: The small capsule contains numerous seeds with basal tufts of long straight hairs. The small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
