Botanic information
Leaf: The almost sessile stiff leathery leaves are obovate to spathulate with an abrupt acute apex. The upper surface is glossy with pale green mid rib and lateral veins and the underside is dull green.
Twice a year the leaves turn orange-red and fall with the onset of the dry season, normally in early spring and late summer. The new leaves appear soon after and the tree is almost evergreen.
Flower: The tiny cyathiform flowers have 5-calyx lobes and no petals with 10-excerted stamens. They appear twice a year in a terminal spike that is up to 150mm (6in) long on a slender terete scape.
The tree is polygamodioecious and the flowers appear from late spring to early summer but the flowering period can vary in tropical regions and they may appear throughout the year.
Fruit: The oblong fleshy drupe has 2-angled wings and is green when young maturing to yellow-red. It has a sweet fibrous flesh that is eaten by bats and humans and contains a single rounded almond flavoured seed. The fruit appears twice a year.
