Botanic information
Leaf: The rough textured dark green elliptical leaves are densely pubescent on both sides and are up to 90mm (3½in) wide. The puckered upper surface has 3-5 longitudinal bowed veins and the apex is acuminate. The pubescent petiole clasps the stem and is up to 20mm (µin) long.
Flower: The purplish 5-pettaled rotate flowers have protruding central stamens and are arranged in a terminal, umbel-like cluster. The flowering period is during spring but can vary in tropical regions and the flowers may appear throughout the year.
Fruit: The grey-black flattened-globular berry is covered in hairs and contains numerous seeds that are surrounded by purple pulp. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively. The fruit is editable but may cause the tongue to become discoloured.
