Propagation
Sow fresh seeds when ripe in containers and place in a cold frame. Germination normally occurs during spring.
Division of the rhizome for beardless species during spring, when the new growth begins.
Note:
All parts of the plant if ingested will cause severe stomach upset.
Botanic information
Leaf: The long linear grey green to mid green leaves are ribbed and have an acuminate apex and are arranged in a fan pattern at the base.
Flower: The crateriform flowers have yellow to orange petals with ovate falls that have violet markings and the elliptical standards are up to 25mm (1 in) long. There are 4 to 12 flowers arranged on a stem that is up to 1 m (3 ft) tall and appears amongst the foliage during spring.
Fruit: The small 6-angular leathery capsule contains numerous seeds that are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively to maintain true to type.
