Propagation
Sow fresh seed in spring in pots and in cold climates place in a cold frame.

Semi-hardwood tip cuttings taken during summer apply bottom heat.
Air layering during the growing period.


Botanic information
Leaf: The palmate leaves have a petiole up to 250mm (9µin) long, clasping the stem and iscomposed of 5 to 7 obovate-oblong leaflets up to 200mm (7µin) long by 88mm (3½in) wide.

The leathery textured leaflets have coarsely serrated margins with an acute to acuminate apex and a petiole up to 25mm (1 in) long. The upper surface is glossy dark green and the underside is pale green with the veins visible on both sides.

Flower: The flower buds are purplish and the tiny male and female stellate flowers have 5-petals sometimes 4 with as many spreading stamens and have 4-5 separate styles with an ovary with 4-5 cells.

They are arranged in a terminal compound umbel with purplish stems that is up to 200mm (8in) wide and each umbel has up to 15-pedunculated flowers. The male and female flowers are found on different plants (dioecious) and appear during winter.

Fruit: The purplish black drupe appear in large clusters. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
