Propagation
Sow seed when ripe and place in a cold frame to germinate. Prick out and pot up when large enough to handle.
Division of the clump during spring. Plant tubers 150 mm (6in) deep from winter to early spring.

Note:
During the dormant winter months it requires a thick mulch.


Botanic information
Leaf: The sessile dark to mid-green leaves form a sheath around the stem and are linear to lanceolate with an acuminate apex up to 25 mm (1 in) wide.

Flower: The two lipped labiate flower have a small upper hood and 2-larger spreading lobed lower petals with undulating margins. It is surrounded by large overlapping petal-like pointed bracts. The flowers are arranged in a spike that is held above the clump during early summer.

Fruit: The small 3-valved capsule is oblong and slow to open. The elongated capsule contains small seeds that are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
