Propagation
Surface sow fresh seeds in flats with a sand peat or sphagnum mix. germination grow seedlings under artificial light and prick out when large enough to handle. Plant out the following year.
Soft tip or semi-hardwood cuttings taken from spring to summer and placed under glass or layering during late summer. The cuttings are an extremely difficult to root in hormone powder can be applied. Cultivars may be veneer grafted onto species root stocks.
Note:
All parts of this plant are poisonous and if ingested it will causing stomach upset and or vomiting. The fruit persists on the plant throughout winter.
Botanic information
Leaf: The leathery textured leaves are oval to broad-lanceolate with a short acuminate apex and a cuneate base. The upper surface is dark green and the underside is yellowish green with a petiole up to 25 mm (1in) long. They are arranged alternately or oppositely in groups of three towards the end of the branchlets.
Flower: The pink to white cyathiform flowers have 5-petals with 10-stamens and have 10-pouches that hold the anthers under tension until they discharge their pollen. They are arranged in a terminal glandular pubescent corymb appearing from late spring to early summer. The flowers will appear shade conditions but best flowering occurs in full sun during spring.
Fruit: The tiny 5-celled dehiscent capsule contains numerous fine seeds that are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
