Propagation
Stratify fresh seeds for 2 to 3 months at 5º C (41ºF) then sow in spring and maintain a temperature of 12º to 15º C. (55º to 59º F).
Semi-hardwood cuttings taken during late summer to autumn.

Note:
The light soft timber is harvested for wood pulp and is generally regarded as inferior to Tsuga heterophylla.
Under cultivation the tree grows smaller with shallow spreading roots.


Botanic information
Leaf: The bluish green to silvery green linear leaves semicircular in cross-section with an obtuse apex and are grooved on the upper surface. The glabrous leaves have inconspicuous stomatic bands on both sides and are arranged along the grey to yellow brown twigs or grouped together towards the end.

The buds are oblong up to 4 mm (? in) long.

Flower: The small male strobili are purplish and appear on a slender drooping stems and the purplish to green female seed cones appear terminally during spring.

Fruit: The yellowish green to purplish oblong cylindrical cone matures red-brown 5-7 months after pollination. It has pubescent broad fan shaped (oblong-obovate) scales that are spreading right angles when reflexed. The red-brown seeds are up to 4 mm (? in) long with a brown wing up to 12 mm (½ in)long.
