Botanic information
Leaf: The leaves vary from elliptical to lanceolate or broad-ovate with an entire or spiny margin. The petiole is short and the apex is acute to acuminate and may be armed with a sharp spine. The undersides are pale green and the texture is leathery.

Flower: The small cyathiform flowers have 4-petals with as many stamens and appear in axillary fascicles with a short pedicle on the previous year's growth. Male and female plants must be grown together in order to produce fruit. The flowers appear in spring but are regarded as insignificant as an ornamental feature.

Fruit: The globose bright red berry-like drupe is arranged in small clusters and persists on the plant during winter.
