Propagation
Stratify fresh seeds for 2 to 3 months at 5º C (41ºF) then sow in spring and maintain a temperature of 12º to 15º C. (55º to 59º F).
Prior to sowing remove the pulp and when seedlings emerge prick out and pot up and grow on for one season in a protected environment before planting out.
Botanic information
Leaf: The dark green thin textured ovate to ovate-elliptical leaves are up to 100 mm (4 in) long by 60 mm (2? in) wide with serrate margins. The apex is acuminate and the base broadly cuneate with a petiole up to 10 mm (? in) long. The underside is dull green with prominent veins and short appressed hairs.
Flower: The flowers are monoecious and appear in spring. The female (pistillate) have linear-lanceolate tepals and appear solitary in the distal leaf axil on young branches. The male (staminate) flowers are 4-5 merous with obovate-rounded tepals up to 2 mm (2/16 in) wide and appear in an axillary corymb, in the leaf axils of young branches.
Fruit: The green to black fleshy ellipsoid to ovoid-globose drupe is up to 12 mm (½ in) by 9 mm (? in) with persistent style and perianth segments and has a pedicle up to 9 mm (? in) long.
