Propagation
Seeds require a warm-cold period for 3 to 5 months prior to sowing and then placed in a open frame to germinate.
Soft tip cuttings of non-flowering shoots during the growing period.
Plant up in early spring with the new growth. Division of the clump (rhizome) during early spring. This plant is easy to transplant.
Botanic information
Leaf: The dark green leaves are orbicular-ovate to obovate up to 76mm (3in) wide with an acute to abruptly acuminate apex. The base is cordate with a petiole up to 25mm (1in) long and the underside is glaucous and pubescent. The new growth is purplish and the young shoots are densely pubescent.
Flower: The bright yellow campanulate flowers have 5-sepals, petals and stamens with red to purple anthers. They are arranged in a narrow pendent raceme that is up to 150mm (6in) long and appears before the leaves during early spring.
Fruit: The small 2-beaked dehiscent capsule is pubescent and has 2-cells each containing 2-glossy black seeds. The small seeds are viable but may be difficult to germinate so the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
