Botanic information
Leaf: The glabrous leathery glossy dark green leaves are obovate to broad elliptical with an acute apex and is up to 33mm (1¥in) wide. The petiole is short and the margin may be toothed towards the apex.
Flower: The small rotate flowers have 4 to 8 petals with as many stamens and appear in axillary fascicles with a short pedicle on the previous year's growth. Male and female plants must be grown together in order to produce fruit (dioecious). The flowers appear during spring but are regarded as insignificant as an ornamental feature.
Fruit: The small berry-like red drupe contains 4-nuttlets and is persistent on the female plant until spring. The small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively to maintain true to type.
